APSA commends Iran auteur Kiarostami with special acknowledgement

Late Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami has received a prestigious honor at the annual Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA).

Kiarostami received the special artistic acknowledgement from the APSA 2017 International Nominations Council during the festival, which was held in Brisbane, Australia, on Thursday.

The accolade was dedicated to the Iranian director as a special award for the first time in the history of APSAs.

The APSA Academy also conferred posthumous Academy membership on the late director.

The veteran Iranian filmmaker passed away on July 4, 2016, at the age of 76.

He is mostly known as a screenwriter, film editor, art director and producer as well as a poet, photographer, painter, illustrator, and graphic designer.

Kiarostami has won many awards including the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Festival in 1997 for his film ‘Taste of Cherry’.

The late writer-director has been widely hailed as a pioneer of the Iranian New Wave. After sad news of his death many fests across the globe presented the legendary helmer with posthumous awards.

Established in 2007 and headquartered in Brisbane, APSA is an international cultural program driven by Brisbane City Council through Brisbane Marketing endorsed by UNESCO and International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF).
